Someone asked a friend that passed on the request and we went back and forth. Here’s some of the conversation…

Raj:
The Numbers got to be 1888 888 88 88 or something similar. Like 1800 777 7777 etc. Let me know if you can get me what I am Looking for.

[I told Joe what he’s asking for is essentially impossible and that he has a higher chance of getting a single digit domain name like Q.com, because there are more single digit domain names than there are toll free numbers with 7 repeating digits.]

Joe:
It has been reported to me from http://www.tollfreenumbers.com that getting any 7 consecutive digits is virtually impossible.

Raj:
I already have 1800 Justdial, I am keen to get a super vanity number like the ones mentioned.
Pls do chk what it could cost .

Joe:
what you describe is an extremely difficult request. I trust you know that such numbers have tremendous value and are not waiting for people who want them J

Raj:
Can you identify who owns the following numbers & if it is possible to acquire any of them from the current owners.

1800 111 11 11
1800 222 22 22
1800 333 33 33
1800 444 44 44
1800 555 55 55
1800 666 66 66
1800 777 77 77
1800 888 88 88
1800 999 99 99

The above numbers in some other series like 1888 or 1866 etc will also do.
We will be willing to negotiate on the value with the current subscriber.

As mentioned in my previous mails, we will be in Florida from 19th Sept t 24th sept & in New York till 29th Sept.

Pls let me know your terms of consultation & helping us in acquiring such a number.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Rajesh

Joe to Bill:
I told him virtually impossible, but here is the reply from India. Perhaps they have BIG $$$$ with which to buy ? Somebody got them once and that was probably by spending a great deal of money, right? So, if you think it is worthwhile to pursue please let me know and perhaps we can split a big fee J

Bill’s reply:
The answer is very easy. No, you can’t identify who owns them and it’s clearly and totally impossible. There is no whois like there is for domains and he clearly hasn’t thought about it in the least, because no phone number can start with a 1 so there is no 111-1111.

He can ignore this answer if he wants to just like he did the previous ones, and he can waste as much of his own time on it as he wants. But you have to have at least a little bit of common sense and tell him he’s being totally ridiculous.

If a short 17 year old kid contacted me on a dating website and told you he wanted to date a supermodel, I’d tell him he probably has to lower his bar a little and that he could still be totally happy with someone else. If he sends me an issue of the sports illustrated swim suit edition and asked me to help him find out the models phone numbers and which ones would go out with him, after I stop laughing I’m not going to assume he’s the son of a billionaire and waste any time trying to find out for him. If this is a prospect at all, he needs to grow up a little at the very least.

Sometimes NO does mean NO!

The point is that it doesn’t matter how determined somebody is, it’s just stupid to try and go after that type of number. But some people just seem to think the rules don’t apply to them or they don’t care how hard it is to find, they just want it.

I think they also mistakenly assume this is going to have such a humongous benefit to their business, they’ve got to have it. And that’s just not the truth either, any more than having a single digit domain name would MAKE their business successful or popular.

If that digit isn’t relevant to their business it’s not going to be that great, and if their product or service isn’t relevant to 444-4444 or whatever they think they want, it’s not going to be as helpful as they’re thinking or dreaming it will be. But I’ve obviously gone on enough and made the point. Don’t be a Raj and think you have to do the impossible or expect someone else that knows it’s impossible to spend time chasing after an unrealistic fantasy.
